Pyramid Population

Today in class, Mr. Schick was not there and we had a substitute. We were assigned to watch a video and answer questions. The video was about the pyramid population. One thing I learned in the video was that Russia and Nigeria have the same total of population. As the years go by though, Russia will have less and less people while Nigeria will have more and more each year. I also learned that there are about 271 people born each minute while there's only 106 that die every minute.

Unit One Test Review

Today in Human Geo we got our first graded test back. My final grade was 83%, a B. I think I did okay but I could do much better. Only the multiple choice questions I did well but I need to be better at the essay questions. I need to be more detailed when I write about something on Mr. Schick's test. I'm glad my test didn't hurt my grade too much but I defiantly need to study more when a test is coming.

Life Expectancy

In class we went over more about population and settlement. We talked about life expectancy, infant mortality, crude birth and death rate, net migration and net emigration. Infant mortality is is the rate of babies that die before their first birthday. Crude birth rate is the number of births per 1000 of the population. Crude death rate is the number of deaths per 1000 of the population.Net migration rate is the difference between the number of persons entering and leaving a country during a year. An excess of persons entering the country is net migration. Last year Canada had 5.65 migrants but this year it has only gone up to 5.66. The United States last year had 3.65 migrants but now only have 2.45. Net emigration is the excess of a person leaving a country and is written a negative number. Last year Mexico had -3.11 and now they have -1.64.

Population and Settlement

In friday's class we talked about population and settlement. Mr. Schick showed us a powerpoint of different stats about the number of people dying and being born. Right now there are 7 billion people on the planet and is increasing by 73 million each year. In years to come our world will most likely be overcrowded and we will start running out of nonrenewable resources. I learned how there is very low life expectancy in chad and how they don't even have enough clean water. 90% of the population growth takes place in development countries like Africa, South and East Asia, and Latin America. When we talked about life expectancy I was very surprised to see U.S. low in this. I think that if people in the U.S. want to live longer they need a better diet.

Test Today

Today in Human Geo we took our first test. The test for me seemed very fair. The some of the of the essay questions I had trouble with so I probably need a better blog but other than that I felt  very confident. The test had a lot of stuff on message to Garcia, globalization, and technology. I'm really hoping to get a good grade on this test.

Class Today

In class today we had a review for wednesday's test. Mr. Schick asked us to come up with test questions we thought would be useful to the test. This technique for studying has really helpful because it helped me know what exactly would be on the quiz. Although not every question we came up with went in, a lot did. The class came up with questions from everything we've worked on so far. Like a message to Garcia, globalization, ancient Greece, Did you know 3.0 and little talk about baby boomers. The class discussion really helped me know what to study and I'm hoping to get an on wednesday.

Globalization

In friday's class we talked about globalization and how it is the connection of the different parts of the world. It results in the expansion in international, cultural, economical, and political activities. Mr. Schick explained it to us by showing us a picture of a KFC and Mcdonalds in Japan. Both restaurants were together in one building. The building was a very Japanese styled building so it was weird seeing a Mcdonalds and a KFC there. Next, Mr. Schick had us check where our shoes and text books and anything else we had were made from. Most of us answered China and there was only one person in the class with an American copy book. It amazes me how a restaurant we use so commonly here can also be used commonly in a place a lot of people in America haven't been and the same goes for all the different Chinese things we have.

Technology

Today in class we talked more about the video from yesterday. A lot of the facts from the facts still shock me, like the fact China will become the number 1 English speaking country. It just weird to think about because there first language isn't English, its Chinese which is a language that doesn't even come close to the English language. I think kids my age don't really understand the effect technology has on our life until an adult reminds us. As we learned in the video our whole world runs on technology whether it's meeting someone on the internet and starting a relationship with them or just checking your phone for a simple texts. It's crazy how fast technology is growing.

Fast Moving World

1. First text message was in 1992
       - My initial reaction was that I couldn't believe it's only been 20 years since the first text message. It feels weird thinking of not texting because I do it all the time.
       - The changes in today's world involving texting is huge. I've never not texted all day and texting is growing even more because now you can even do it on your laptop.
       - Texting is a big part of my life. I use it everyday all day, except in school.

2. China will soon become the number 1 english speaking country.
       - My initial reaction was no that can't be right but after i remembered how big China is it made more sense but its still weird to think about.
       - The changes to everyone knowing English is a good thing to me. Its easier to connect with the world.
       - I speak English and hardly any spanish

3. Today's learners will have 10 to 14 jobs by the time there 38
       - My initial reaction was that I was shocked that I am predicted to have that many jobs in a short time period.
       - The changes in jobs in adults today is crazy. My mom has had about 4 or 5 different jobs in my life time and the need for something new is growing more and more with each generation. It makes me nervous for how many jobs all be in.
       - I haven't had a real job yet but jobs play a big role in technology. School is my job right now and I use a laptop in every class.

The Ancient Greek and Excellence

Agora- The Agora was a central spot in the ancient greek city-states. The literal meaning of the word is "gathering place" or "assembly". The Agora was the center of athletic, artistic, spiritual and political life of the city.

Arete-  means of "excellence of any kind". This notion of excellence was ultimately bound up with the fulfillment or purpose or function.

polis- means city in greek. It also means citizenship and body of citizens.

the year 508 b.c.-  Democracy began in Athens. Male citizens  were given the chance to vote on how the city-states should be run.

Socrates-  was a classical greek philosopher  as one of the founders of the western philosophy.

The death of Socrates- was charged with youth and impiety and sentenced to death.

The Socratic method- is a form of inquiry and discussion between individuals,, based on asking and answering questions to stimulate critical thinking and to illuminate ideas.

What the ancient greek meant if they called you an idiot- a private person, not interested in politics. The term they used back then ultimately became the term they use now.

A message from Garcia

Today in class we talked more about a message to Garcia. We talked about what the author might have been feeling during writing this. It showed how he felt about the next generation. The author complained and complained about how unreliable the next generation was. He quoted that it takes a good man or women to do the job when the boss wasn't even there. I learned that there's no shame in being poor if you work hard. I like that saying a lot because there can be a rich person who has done absolutely nothing with there life but they inherited their parents money and then a poor person who works everyday, all day and has next to nothing. After talking about a message to Garcia for a while Mr. Schick explained to us how the story was a metaphor. Next, Mr. Schick stressed and stressed to us how only a little over half the nation votes. I think that's very sad considering I always hear people talking about politics around me and some of them don't even vote. When I'm older I'm going to vote for who I want in office instead of complain about who it ends up being.

Missed Class

Today I was not in class because I had to leave early for a soccer game. We played St. Paul's. We had a great game and actually came out winning five to one. It was great experience because the game showed we could work as a team.
